The cost of epilepsy consists of three components:
- Direct: diagnostic and periodic follow-up examinations, treatment
- Indirect: trauma, co-morbid conditions, missed working hours, etc.
- Intangible: employment, family, driving, psycho-social and other problems
This cost has never been studied in Georgia. Consequently, the degree of severity of the epilepsy burden is unknown to the Georgian health care system. Collecting data on the severity of the disease, investigating the causes, and treating it will greatly help to identify problems in epilepsy management, planning the cost-effective methods, and increase the wellbeing of patients with epilepsy.
